Strengths And Weaknesses In Using Horizontal Drilling

By Janet Moore

In this world, the economy had progressed and technologies became advanced. You could really observe it by observing your city. Tall buildings were made. Different transportations with nice features were created. And many infrastructures were being built. As for that, it really tells that engineering field had absolutely improved. Many techniques are applied by the builders to construct roads, bridges, tunnels and etc. They may also use rock and dirt directional drilling.

Million years ago, Chinese were the first people who began the practice of drilling wells. That happened around on 2000 BC and the tools that they used are cables so it could produce some salt water. And as the world had reached the modern period, many people had started venturing oils, electricity and gas industries. As the requirements of those increased, this technology also changed and innovated sot it would be more convenient to the humans.

Horizontal Directional Drilling or also called as HDD is a construction trenchless technique in installing pipes on underground. It has a minimal impact on the surface and much modernized compared to the traditional techniques before. Electricity as well as water industries can gain benefits on applying this. Nevertheless, it has its strengths and also weaknesses.

If you want a neater work with faster result, HDD is your ideal option. Working with this could not disturb the landscape or surface as you dig some holes to install some pipes. Because of that, some would really utilize this method.

For road constructions, this technique is really useful. Traffic is really heavy when builders are constructing roads. And people dislike staying on their cars when there is traffic. With HDD, road opening consents will not be needed anymore because this work can be done under the road. For that reason, residents will not be bothered with traffic.

For those who dislike having their construction project always delayed, this technique will be their ideal choice. Projects tend to delay because of the poor weather conditions. But HDD will mend that situation for it can still function under that condition. As a result, its flexibility is much higher for it could be installed in any places.

But then again it also has some flaws. Purchasing this technology would be quite pricey. Moreover, you need some crews that are skilful in using the machinery. Barite sag will also be a problem on this because it can cause some difficulties on cementing or on sticking pipe and also can have some poor tools on logging. In addition, it might not work well if the surface has rocks and some cobbles.

Regardless of its advantages and disadvantages to humans and economy, this method contains some flaws to environment. The noise pollution coming from the machines can cause disruption for the wildlife. In addition, when wells and pipelines exploded per chance, it releases dangerous chemicals that can have bad consequences to animals and also humans. Not only it pollutes the water and air, humans and animals would suffer some health problems.

HDD has its many advantages. Oil and gas industries really gain benefits from this. However, humans still need to be aware of its effects to environment.
