Facts Regarding Golf Course Construction

By Melissa Howard

Golf is a game with many fans and enthusiasts. People spend several hours watching or playing the game on a weekly basis. The game is associated with prestige and members of the upper social class. Thus, golf course construction has become a lucrative business in which there are many service companies engaged. The rest of this article presents information regarding the construction of golf courses. By reading this article, one should be able to know what the process entails.

The first step in this activity is usually to pick a location where the course will be constructed. Usually, the best spot is one that has sandy soil and receives a lot of sunlight during the day. Sandy soil makes a perfect choice because it allows for good drainage. In order for the grass to remain healthy, the location should be receiving breezes.

One should start excavating the land after they have identified the perfect spot for the field. When excavating, the land should be tilled up to 20 inches of depth. Sod that may be existing in the place must be removed to avoid having to deal with weeds later. However, if the sod does not have any weeds in it, it may be left to remain.

The next step is to design the appearance of the golf course. The design phase is usually the most tricky part in any process. This is because in this phase, one has to create a mental picture of how the final landscape will look like before implementing it. This process has been made much easier by computer aided design software. All the design activities are done with a computer and then implemented on land more easily.

Completion of the design phase should mark the beginning of the process of installing drainage systems. The ground usually has a general slope to allow for easy drainage. Drainage systems are made in the form of 8-inch trenches that slope uniformly from the center of the field. When one is installing the drainage system, they should also incorporate irrigation systems for watering the lawn.

Providing adequate amount of water in a uniform and timely manner is the basis for turf to thrive in health. This is attained best using sprinkler systems. Garden hoses waste time, require a lot of labor, and apply water unevenly, which makes then unsuitable. To make the landscape slightly and free of obstacles, all components of the sprinkler such as pipes should be buried into the soil.

It is very expensive, labor-intensive, and time-consuming to construct a golf course. The job also requires heavy machinery and equipment. Thus, one should hire a service company that specializes in this field rather than trying to accomplish it without help. The company should be licensed and experienced.

There are several ways to know if a company offers quality services. One of these ways is visiting formers sites worked on. Previous jobs should give a hint regarding the quality of services provided. If one is not pleased with what they see, it is best to consider the many other options available.
